Name every country in the world or one continent at a time, click them on the map, or name the biggest by population and by area.
The classic geography quiz: name every country in the world, or one continent at a time. It's the quickest way to find the gaps in your mental map, usually somewhere in Oceania, the Caribbean or Central Africa. Other modes ask you to click each country on the map, or to name the biggest countries by population or by area. If you've done the countries quiz on Sporcle or JetPunk, it's the same format, played on a 3D globe. (Geographys isn't affiliated with Sporcle or JetPunk.)
- Which countries count?
- The 197 countries Geographys uses everywhere: the 193 UN members, the two UN observer states (Vatican City and Palestine), Kosovo and Taiwan. Territories like Greenland and Puerto Rico aren't on the list, except in the With territories rounds, which add 47 inhabited ones and are free with an account.
- Which territories count in the With territories rounds?
- Inhabited places with their own ISO country code, the ones most world maps and territory lists show on their own. So French Guiana, Réunion and Greenland are in, but the Canary Islands, the Azores and Kaliningrad aren't, because they have no code of their own and count as their country. Uninhabited territories and those with only staff, like South Georgia, don't count either.
- How long do I get?
- About 4.6 seconds a country, with at least five minutes: roughly 15 minutes for the whole world, less for one continent.
- What are the other modes?
- Click the map, where you're given a country and find it on the globe, and the population and area rankings, where you name the biggest countries.
The world map isn't fixed. South Sudan, independent since 2011, is the newest member of the United Nations, and Montenegro and Serbia went their separate ways in 2006. Names change too: Swaziland became Eswatini in 2018, Macedonia became North Macedonia in 2019, and the UN has used Türkiye since 2022.
Geographys counts 197 countries, and the same list is used in every game, so a country you learn here comes up everywhere else.
