About Globe Atlas

Globe Atlas is an interactive 3D globe of every country and territory in the world. Spin it, zoom in, and click any place for a quick profile: its capital, population, government, official languages, coastline and land neighbours. Zoom in close and the borders sharpen to a more detailed map.

Territories are on the globe too, from Greenland and Gibraltar to French Polynesia, with the country they belong to. Disputed borders are drawn the way maps in your own country draw them, with a note saying so.

The borders and coastlines come from Natural Earth, a free public-domain map of the world, with Crimea drawn as part of Ukraine as the UN General Assembly does. Country populations are the World Bank's latest figures, and names, regions and areas come from the world-countries dataset; the credits page lists every source. A 3D globe also shows sizes as they really are, so Greenland, Canada and Russia look the size they are rather than the size flat maps make them.

How it works

  1. 1Spin the globe and click a country or territory, or choose one from Find a place, to open its profile.
  2. 2Country of the Day features a different country every day with a few facts to start from, and Take me somewhere random jumps anywhere on the globe.
  3. 3Where several places overlap at the spot you clicked, pick the one you meant from the list.
  4. 4Where Geographys Learn has articles on a place, its borders or its flag, the profile links to them.
  5. 5From a country you can jump to its capital's antipode, the point on the exact opposite side of the Earth, see it in nine map projections, or measure its coastline.
