Mongolia–Russia border
A long border between Siberia and Mongolia, whose only other neighbour is China. Russia wants to lay the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline across it and through Mongolia to China, a project the three leaders backed in 2025 but whose price was still unsettled in 2026.

Between two giants
Mongolia conducts much of its dealings with its two giant neighbours, Russia and China, through a three-way summit. At the seventh, on 2 September 2025, the three leaders backed the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, and Mongolia’s presidency said they had affirmed their commitment to a gas pipeline from Russia to China via Mongolian territory; Gazprom said it had signed a legally binding memorandum with China’s CNPC to build it.[2]

Power of Siberia 2
The pipeline would run about 2,600 km from western Siberia through Mongolia to China, carrying 50 billion cubic metres of gas a year. Analysts told Al Jazeera Russia wants it to replace revenue lost when Europe cut its imports of Russian gas after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, while China sees it as more secure than shipped LNG. In May 2026 the Kremlin said there was agreement on the route and construction, but no timetable, and analysts said price was still the main obstacle.[1]
