Liberia’s counties share one rule: the national Lone Star flag goes in the top corner. The rest of each flag is a small picture of the county, its mountains, rivers, trees and coast, which makes them some of the most literal flags anywhere.
The coast
Grand Cape Mount
A green mountain on white, inside a green border.
Bomi
A disc of trees on a hill, on purple.
Montserrado
Blue and red diagonals, with trees and a house in a disc. It holds Monrovia, the capital.
Margibi
Green over red, with an emblem in a blue and white disc.
Grand Bassa
Dark blue, with a band of red and white stripes.
Rivercess
A palm and a rising sun on white, between blue stripes.
Sinoe
A green cross on white.
Grand Kru
A palm on white, between green and yellow stripes.
Maryland
A palm and the Cape Palmas lighthouse. It was once the separate Republic of Maryland, which joined Liberia in 1857.
The interior
Gbarpolu
A diamond and a tree on yellow, for the county’s mines and forests.
Lofa
A river across green.
Bong
Pink mountains under an orange sky.
Nimba
Red, white and blue stripes, with a disc showing a mountain and tree.
Grand Gedeh
A green mountain with the sun rising behind it.
River Gee
A river winding through forest, under a rising sun.
