Spain’s regional flags
Seventeen autonomous communities and two autonomous cities, each with a flag of its own, and plenty of red and gold borrowed from the old Crown of Aragon.

Spain’s 1978 constitution let its regions become self-governing autonomous communities, and each adopted a flag in its statute of autonomy. Many are much older than that: the red and gold stripes of the Crown of Aragon turn up in four of them.
The Aragonese stripes
Catalonia, Aragon, Valencia and the Balearics all descend from the four red bars on gold of the medieval Crown of Aragon.
Catalonia
The senyera: four red stripes on gold, one of the oldest flag designs in Europe still in use.
Aragon

Valencian Community

The north
Basque Country
The ikurriña: a green saltire and white cross on red, designed by the Arana brothers in 1894.
Galicia
A diagonal blue band on white, taken from the old flag of the port of A Coruña.
Asturias
The gold Victory Cross on blue, recalling the Asturian kingdom that began the Reconquista.
Cantabria
White over red, the colours of the region’s old maritime flag.
Navarre
Red, with the gold chains of Navarre’s coat of arms under a crown.
La Rioja
Four horizontal stripes: red, white, green and gold.
The centre and south
Castile and León
Quartered castles and lions: the arms of the old kingdoms of Castile and León.
Madrid
Crimson for Castile, with the seven stars of Madrid’s coat of arms.
Castilla-La Mancha
Halved: crimson with a gold castle at the hoist, plain white in the fly.
Extremadura
Green, white and black horizontal stripes.
Andalusia
Green, white, green, the colours of the Andalusian nationalist movement.
Murcia
Crimson with four castles and seven crowns.
Islands and cities
Canary Islands
White, blue and yellow stripes, usually said to join the colours of the islands’ two provinces.
